Choosing the Right 3D Printing Material for Your Project
PLA, ABS, PETG, TPU with so many options, how do you pick the right filament? Here's a practical guide for Sydney makers and businesses.
Why Material Choice Matters
The filament you choose affects strength, flexibility, temperature resistance, surface finish, and cost. Pick the wrong one and your part may warp, snap, or simply not do the job.
PLA — The All-Rounder
PLA is the most popular 3D printing material for good reason. It's easy to print, affordable, and produces excellent surface detail. Perfect for prototypes, display models, and decorative items. It's not ideal for high-heat environments (it softens around 60°C).
ABS Durable & Heat-Resistant
ABS is tougher than PLA and handles higher temperatures (250-280 degs). Great for functional parts, enclosures, and automotive components. It requires a heated bed and benefits from an enclosure to prevent warping.
PETG — Strong & Chemical-Resistant
PETG combines the ease of PLA with much of the strength of ABS. It's impact-resistant, food-safe (with proper certification), and resists chemicals and moisture. An excellent middle-ground choice.
TPU Flexible & Rubber-Like
TPU is a flexible filament ideal for phone cases, gaskets, tyres, and any part that needs to bend or absorb impact.
Carbon Fibre Pro Grade
Carbon fibre-infused filaments are extremely stiff and strong, ideal for drones, RC parts, and structural components. Typically 15% actual fibre. The rest is usually PLA.
