How to Prepare Your STL File for 3D Printing
A few minutes of prep can save hours of print failures. Here's how to make sure your file is print-ready before you upload.
Start With a Good Mesh
Your STL file is a collection of triangles that form the surface of your model. For a successful print, the mesh needs to be manifold (watertight) — no holes, gaps, or inverted faces.
Check for Common Issues
- Holes in the mesh — fill them in your CAD software or a tool like Meshmixer
- Inverted normals — make sure all faces point outward
- Self-intersecting geometry — parts of the model that overlap themselves
- Paper-thin walls — walls should be at least 0.8mm thick for FDM printing
Optimise for Orientation
The orientation of your model on the build plate affects strength, surface finish, and support material. Generally:
- Flat surfaces face down for better adhesion
- Overhangs greater than 45° may need supports
- Layer lines run horizontally — orient accordingly for strength
Export Settings
When exporting your STL, use a resolution that balances detail and file size. A deviation tolerance of 0.01mm is usually plenty. Binary STL format keeps file sizes manageable.
File Formats We Accept
We accept STL, OBJ, 3MF, STEP, IGES, AMF, 3DS, and FBX. STL is recommended for fastest turnaround. If you're sending a STEP file, we can often re-mesh it for you.
